The Pennsylvania Germans of the 18th and Early 19th centuries used Redware (much as their ancestors had done in Europe) for food preservation and storage.
This particular jar, probably used to preserve and serve larger fruits like apples or pears... This makes an everyday item just a bit more decorative.
